Selling your yacht

The Allround Yachting approach

Selling your yacht is not something you do lightly. It is often an emotional step; there are many things to consider.

What preparations does the boat need and which sales strategy suits me best? Which broker should I choose? Will I be left without a boat? And what about the process itself: what does the sales process look like? How do I get my yacht ready for the photographer and viewings? But also the technical side: what are my obligations towards the buyer? How does a technical purchase inspection work? What should I do when registering with the Land Registry?

In every sales process, we deal with different people, different yachts and different reasons for selling. But the route from A to Z and the intermediate steps always remain the same. What is useful for you and what information will help you depends, of course, on your situation. As a yacht broker, we are happy to think along with you.

Sell your yacht in 5 steps

As a yacht broker, we strive for the best results.

That could be the highest price, but also a nice buyer who will take good care of your boat. Our focus is on selling your yacht, and we have a clear and proven step-by-step plan. A trusted point of contact, which is very reassuring.

  • Step 1: An introduction on board.

First of all, we want to know everything about you. Why do you want to, or need to, sell your yacht? How long have you been sailing with the ship and why did you buy the boat at the time? Where have you sailed to? We love to hear your stories.

Then we will inspect the boat. We will check whether the paperwork is in order, for example, with a VAT declaration and CE manual with declaration of conformity. We will also check whether the vessel is registered in the land registry and what its status is. Together, we will go through the maintenance history and compile a presentation folder that is as complete as possible, with all invoices and manuals for the installations on board.

We provide you with insight into the current market situation for your yacht using our database, experience, history and comparable sister ships. For what amounts have sister ships been offered for sale, for how much were they actually sold and within what time frame?

Figures do not tell the whole story, which is why we identify the differences and apply our expertise and sales experience to the situation. We develop our advice into a clear plan of action, tailored to your situation and wishes.

  • Step 2: Assignment confirmation and strategy

You choose us. We immediately get to work according to the agreements we have made in the brokerage agreement. We collect all official data and specifications of your yacht.

There are no unimportant questions, which is why we are easily accessible. You will always have your own yacht broker in our team, so you will have a permanent point of contact. Someone who is well informed about the current state of affairs. We always discuss what we are doing or not doing and why, and what the next step is.

  • Step 3: The presentation of your yacht

It's high time to offer your yacht to potential buyers. Be as comprehensive as possible, because presentation is everything. You only get one chance to make a first impression. An extensive photo shoot captures your yacht in beautiful images. We also use these for publicity on various websites, our sales wall, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.

As an option, you can have a drone video made of your yacht, which provides an extra complete picture and is also a nice souvenir for yourself. A “For Sale” sign with a QR code will be placed on the guardrail. Ready to go!

  • Step 4: Viewings

And then come the viewings. Now it really begins! Your yacht broker has the key and knows where the main switches are located on board. We can tell you everything about the boat, even your favourite spot in the cockpit.

We fully supervise the viewings and prepare them well. The curtains are opened and we turn on the lights in the boat. Soft background music is playing and the navigation equipment is switched on. The flag is flying on the boat and the toilet has been flushed. Bring on the buyers! Once the viewers have left the boat, we always give you an update on the viewing.

  • Step 5: Selling the yacht and more...

Negotiating, drawing up contracts, supervising third-party funds, supervising purchase inspections, transferring and settling the file: our speciality! As soon as an offer is made, we will of course inform you immediately. Not only the amount offered, but also the conditions play a major role and represent value.

After verbal agreement, we invite the prospective buyer to review and sign the purchase/sale agreement. After receiving the deposit, we schedule a purchase inspection if desired. Your yacht broker supervises this and discusses the findings. The buyer and seller are welcome to be present.

After this day, it is usually immediately clear how the rest of the transaction will proceed. We supervise the sale of your yacht right up to the final signatures.

Selling your boat: what do you need to consider?

  • The advantage of buying first

The market is tight; there are few yachts for sale and few new yachts are coming onto the market. The turnaround time is short: yachts are selling at an unprecedented rate. Interest in virtually every boat is so high that you have to react quickly to have a chance.

  • The disadvantage of buying first

You would rather not be without a boat and decide to purchase your dream yacht first. Then you need to sell your own boat. Usually this goes smoothly these days, but it is never 100% certain.

Conversely, with the limited supply, your boat may sell quickly and you may not have found another yacht yet. Or you may have already found a boat, but delivery is still pending. This may be due to repairs or refitting, or you may be experiencing delivery problems with the new installations.

  • Don't miss out

Have you found a yacht that perfectly matches your boat requirements? Then, of course, you will have to wait and see whether such an opportunity will arise again in the near future. Perhaps that is why you think: if my dream boat comes along, I will take immediate action. This is one of the most important reasons for choosing to buy first: you won't miss out.

  • Sure return

There is no guarantee that you will receive a higher price in a few months than you can get now. You cannot even be sure that you will get the same price as you can get now. That is why you might want to consider starting the sales process as soon as possible, so that you are assured of a high return.

What's more, if you have already sold your current boat, you know exactly how much you can spend on your next one. That's reassuring.

  • Double costs

Are you considering purchasing a new boat before your current boat has been sold? If so, you run the risk of incurring double costs for a period of time. You must be able to afford this. Mooring fees, insurance, maintenance—you will receive these invoices twice during this period.

  • Financing your new yacht

Another potential disadvantage of buying another boat first is that you may temporarily have less budget available for other things. To avoid this situation, there are other ways to finance your yacht.

And if the proceeds are higher than expected, your budget will be higher than you could have imagined. That means you will have more freedom of choice...

  • Temporarily without a boat

Have you decided to sell your current boat before purchasing a new one? Then you may find yourself temporarily without a boat. Renting one for a weekend or a long holiday could be a solution. Alternatively, you could borrow a boat from a family member or friend.

While some people may lose sleep over the idea of not having their own boat for a while, others may not mind so much. We would be happy to discuss these considerations with you.

Conclusion

You should embark on the sales process, which you have embarked upon together with us as your yacht broker, with confidence and without worries. So if you are losing sleep over double expenses, sell your boat first before purchasing another one.
